I saw an article that emotional intelligence skills help leaders manage people. How do leaders learn these skills? Is there a research-proven method?
Can leaders learn emotional intelligence?
Yes, they can, but they have to want to. I've worked with managers and leaders in many organizations world-wide, and researched the effects of EQ leadership training. A training program is a useful starting point ( http://www.EQperformance.com/skills.php ). Coaching is invaluable, especially when combined with a good EQ assessment (see http://www.6seconds.org/tests/ for a comparison of leading EQ tests).
Two big challenges: We've had leaders who want either a "quick fix," or to have us "fix their people" without being willing to do the work themselves. On the EQ Performance web site there is a case study about a very cool leader named Paul McDermot and his work to implement EQ leadership skills. He says, basically, that this is something that you work on an ongoing basis. As you can see in the case study, the effort paid off massively for him and his organization.
Reply:level 4 leaders cannot be taught to b level 5 leaders. Sorry.
