I am looking for future research areas in the application of finite element methods in foundation engineering or liquefactions. Anybody to share ideas on this???
Research in application of FEM?
FEM is usually used to show how stress reacts within a structure in a response to a strain input.
like bending a rod with a right angle. the stress will develop in the angle portion.
for earthworks and liquifaction, this could be interesting and somewhat difficult. prior to liquifaction the stresses build up and concentrate at the boundaries of the different parts of the foundation. when liquifaction occurs, the there is no shear forces as the ground becomes a "fluid".
it would be possible to determine the direction of fluid flow, however based upon a prior knowledge of the pre-liquifaction stresses.
nice project.
