How does one write a dictionary for commercial purposes? Can you use other dictionaries as a basis?

I am interested in publishing dictionaries of philosophy, psychology, medicine, law, religion, mathematics, business, science, foreign language to English and English to foreign language dictionaries, dictionaries of synonyms, antonyms, idioms, etymologies, rhyming and alliteration, etc. I am contemplating using out of print books older than 75 years or 100 years as the source materials as these are as I understand in the Public Domain. I would like to know the necessary methods for writing such dictionaries -- documenting the sources used, the legal concerns in writing such reference works, staying within the bounds of academic and publishing business customs and practices. Any references that might help in these matters would be greatly appreciated. I understand that part of my research will have to be into lexicography itself. I would like to publish these dictionaries and other reference works for both commercial purposes and for Open Content/Public Domain uses.

It seems like you are on the right track. Encyclopedia's are obsolete. We are using a commercial dictionary as we read, type and surf the i-net. It is truly awesome that even this, no..especially this forum exists. I am glad to be able to be a part of it. I like your idea, why not be able to use other dictionaries, I dont think its plagarism, your publication most likely would not be copywritten... Go For It e-mail me the finished project.
