I have to do a project on how a sustainable community would handle nuclear waste. I'vr already found out about vitrification. Any suggestions for other methods I should research?
Enviro friendly nuclear waste management?
Environment friendly, now that should make for a good joke. Nuclear waste is NEVER going to be environmentally friendly. The best way to get rid of that stuff would be a safe way to get it into an escape orbit away from earth, heading for the sun.
Vitrification, by the way, doesn't work. SRP, the Dept. Of Energy project at Savannah Nuclear Project in SC has yet to find a way to lock up nuclear waste do that it is stable for long periods of time, like forever, and not a menace to anyone. Everything they have tried has failed in one way or another. I know this is not what you want to hear, but it is thus far true. Nuclear waste has 1 word to describe it, deadly. It will never be friendly to anyone, and it's disposal will always be an issue.
Reply:There are several points to consider including breeder reactors and a similar approach, neutron bombardment.
One active disposal method to consider is to bombard radioactive waste with neutrons, speeding up the decay of waste products.
