What type of student progress reporting method does your COUNTRY use for school-age children?

What type of student progress reporting method does your COUNTRY use for school-age children?

I'm refering to the method that comes home to parents -- "grade cards", "progress reports", "report cards", etc.

Mostly, I'm doing research on types of "grading" methods used in other countries. Please tell me where you are, the age groups/grade levels and the type of "reporting" system used.

(Westerville, Ohio -- our parochial school uses plus/check/I and NI on student progress reports for grades K through 8, which would be ages 5 to 14).

What type of student progress reporting method does your COUNTRY use for school-age children?
they send home report cards... in lower rgades they are actual cards... and in older grades they are printed copy paper... they send home 9 weeks grades 4 times a year... and every two nine weeks they send home SEMESTER grades..... (an average of the two 9 week grades, twice a year)

then they also send out MIDTERM grades in the middle of every nine week period to let parents know how things are going... then twice a year.... you have to meet physically with the parent... federally mandated law
Reply:well in Kentucky we use S for Satisfactory and U for Unsatisfactory progress as well as plus and minus for the lower grades, I think they do that in K-1 then they start using the letter grades A,B,C,D or F. My son's in 6th grade. We get report cards every 9 weeks.

Research questionnaire. how do i do it?

My research aims at examining the importance of methods used in developing the character of college students. such as punctuality, class attendance, compulsory meetings, formal dressing, etc. things like that that have been put in place for character development.

do u know any website i could check to speed up my research because ive got 2 weeks to submit this.

thanks You!!!

Social Psychology research?

What are the future methods for social psychology research? In what direction do you think social psychology will now go?

Social Psychology research?
Future methods......maybe more ethnographies, although thats more a sociology thing. I still think we're going to see human research pools @ universities, and that the bulk of psychological research will continue to be based off of white undergraduate students. I think that the internet may impact the amount of survey research that we see, or that experiments may move to computer simulations. I think we may see a sharp increase in the number of online experiments.

To improve my guitar technique what methods of practise can I use at home to better myself on stage?

It's research for a college project so any help would be great.

To improve my guitar technique what methods of practise can I use at home to better myself on stage?
Practice while standing up, and practice all the time, like I do.
Reply:Practise the chords/tab song so you know it out of the inside of your head. I would say work on your strumming/plucking techniques and work on the tone you produce! If you keep on practising it will also improve your general guitar playing. Good luck
Reply:HI,,,I use to play drums for years, now I play guitar, I also have a few friends that play guitar, no.1 get your chops down, play them over and over again, until you can play them in your sleep, nothing worse than a guitar player that doesn't know what he's doing, practice in the mirror, you might think you have some cool moves down, but you might come off looking like a dork to others, seeing yourself in the mirror will help you decide what looks cool and what doesn't,,,remember this we all copy alittle bit from someone, a close friend of mine always liked the way Jimmy Page worked a stage, so he took some of those moves and used them when he played, plus adding some of his own stuff, made for an interesting live show. do what comes natural, have lots of attitude on stage but remain humble. If someone says hey your a great guitar player, simply say thank you and that it takes alot of practice.
Reply:tablature is a good way of perfecting, or The classical guitar...if you can do the classical pieces you would have cracked it...
Reply:Depends on how comfortable you are on stage. If you're nervous and shake when you play in front of people, the you MUST never practive alone. Always practice so other people can hear you and see you; that way you'll become accustom to playing around people.

To improve your overall technique, you should learn all 7 scales, in all 7 modes, for all 7 keys. Start off by learning the more popular scales, like E and A (common blues type riffs). Once you get comfortable with that, then practice blending the modes and scales together.

But, the most important thing to remember, when learning those scales/modes/theory - is that nothing can replace heart and feeling when you're playing. The scales and modes only help you translate your emotion into something that sounds in key - but always play from your heart instead of from a scale or mode.

Happy Shredding . . .
Reply:i have the same problem but i find if you can practice with your freind in your group and pretend your on stage it will work.

also practice the songs once a day until your gig you will be amazed how quickly it comes to you.
Reply:If you're English and have Sky go to Channel 368 - they have loads of guitar programmes you can follow on there.
Reply:Get some knowledgeable friends that will offer positive criticism and try your stuff on them.
Reply:Try stimulating your partner!!!!

Just finished reading the rest of your question.... and my answers is to ignore the above, it's hardly something you can put into your project.
Reply:I used a book by Murray Philips. It's great at teaching folk guitar you can incorporate into other genres, and you don't have to read music at all! Unfortunately, it was published 30 years ago on a mimeograph machine, so I don't know where you can get it.
Reply:constantly practicing with unknown chord patterns.

constantly playing scales.

try using guitar method books, this should increase your knowledge of the fret board.

also, keep practising chords or solos that you have difficulty with - one day, you wake and you'll be able to play them
Reply:Practice the hell out of the pentatonic scales. That's really the best thing you can do. Practice at least an hour a night. Play and sing at the same time. Get a damn good instructor, they will show you what you are doing wrong and how to correct it. Hang out with musicians who are better than you. There is a lot of knowledge they can offer. Never stop playing, if that means you're in a band you can't really dig, you still need to play till something better comes along. The more experience in front of people the better. Play along with records. Learn several styles. Learn to play bass. Good guitar players are easy to find, a good bass is hard to find.

What are the solutions to these limitations?

Please answer clearly and provide links if needed!

Would it be better if we use like other methods like meshless, boundary element, finite volume or finite voulme method to model bridges?

What are the limitations of current bridge researches that involves Finite Element methods and those that don'
There are two types of studies to be done on most engineering design problems that can best be described as macro- and micro-

An overall system is usually first analyzed by a control volume approach. These approaches tend to assume uniform conditions about the structure in order to get some basic starting points. Beginning a brake design in a car by looking at kinetic energy to size the rotors, for example, is a control volume type approach.

Finite element can then take the initial and boundary conditions developed as inputs, and find any problems or opportunities that may lie in the details of structure.

So I think the answer to your questions lie in that each of the methods you identify is valid, but you have to match it to the right step in the process of the design; from overall systemic approaches to narrowed-scope, detailed analysis of critical areas.

Are you sure you don't mean "boundary condition" and "control volume" in your last paragraph describing your various methods of analysis?

UN Climate Panel Accused of Possible Research Fraud?

UN Climate Panel Accused of Possible Research Fraud

At virtually the same time NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies was correcting historical climate data with the assistance of Climate Audit's Steve McIntyre, a British mathematician discovered serious flaws in papers used and cited by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its most recent Assessment Report.

Douglas J. Keenan, a former Morgan Stanley arbitrageur and current independent mathematical researcher, identified "fabrications" in such studies that suggest a "marked lack of integrity in some important work on global warming that is relied upon by the IPCC" and that "the insignificance of urbanization effects on temperature measurements has not been established as reliably as the IPCC assessment report assumes."

As Keenan stated in his full report concerning this matter (emphasis added throughout):

Meteorological stations sometimes move, and this can affect the temperature measurements of the stations. For example, one of the stations relied upon by the above two papers was originally located on the upwind side of a city and later moved, 25 km, to be on the downwind side of the city. Such a move would be expected to increase the measured temperatures, because a city generates heat. Another station relied upon by the papers was originally located in the center of a city and then moved, 15 km, to be by the shore of a sea. Such a move would be expected to decrease the measured temperatures.

Those that have read the work of Anthony Watts at SurfaceStations.org certainly can understand what Keenan was talking about. He continued:

It is clear that when a station moves, the temperature data from before the move is not, in general, directly comparable to the data from after the move. This problem can occur even if the move is over a small distance. For example, if a station moves from being in the middle of a field to being by an asphalt area, then the measured temperatures would be expected to increase, even though the distance moved might be only 100 m. (A related issue is that the land use around a station can change over time, and this can affect measurements.)

In global warming studies, an important issue concerns the integrity of temperature measurements from meteorological stations. The latest assessment report from the IPCC indicates that the global average temperature rose by roughly 0.3 °C over the period 1954-1983. Thus, if errors in temperature measurements were of similar size to, or larger than, 0.3 °C, there could be a serious problem for global warming studies. The papers of Jones et al. and Wang et al. both consider this issue. The paper of Jones et al. is one of the main 2 works cited by the IPCC to support its contention that measurement errors arising from urbanization are tiny, and therefore are not a serious problem.

With that in mind, the problem Keenan identified was that the papers in question misrepresented the static condition of a large number of weather stations:

Regarding station movements over time, the papers of Jones et al. and Wang et al. make the following statements.

The stations were selected on the basis of station history: we chose those with few, if any, changes in instrumentation, location or observation times. [Jones et al.]

They were chosen based on station histories: selected stations have relatively few, if any, changes in instrumentation, location, or observation times.... [Wang et al.]

Unfortunately, these statements appear to be quite false:

Each paper gives the same reference for its statement: a report resulting from a project done jointly by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The DOE/CAS report (available via http://cdiac.esd.ornl.gov/ndps/ndp039.ht... resulted from concern over "possible CO2-induced climate changes". Its purpose was to present "the most comprehensive, long-term instrumental Chinese climate data presently available". It contains, in particular, histories of some Chinese meteorological stations, including the different locations of those stations and the dates on which they moved, if any.

The DOE/CAS report was formally published in full in 1991-Wang et al. and Jones et al. used a pre-publication version of the report. A revised version of the report was published in 1997, but the station histories are the same in the two versions.

Jones et al. and Wang et al. consider the same 84 meteorological stations in China. Regarding 49 of those stations, the DOE/CAS report says, "station histories are not currently available" and "details regarding instrumentation, collection methods, changes in station location or observing times ... are not known" (sect. 5). For those 49 stations, then, the above-quoted statements from the two papers are impossible.

Shocking. But there was more:

Regarding the remaining 35 stations that were analyzed by the two papers, I have prepared a summary of the relevant information from the DOE/CAS report. The summary is available at http://www.informath.org/apprise/a5620/b... As an example from the summary, one station had five different locations during 1954-1983, with the locations as much as 41 km apart. Two other stations each had four different locations. At least half the stations had substantial moves (two other examples, of 25 km and 15 km, were given above). Moreover, several stations have histories that are inconsistent, making reliable analysis unattainable.

(The station that moved five times during the study period, #54511, is discussed by Yan et al. [Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, 18: 309 (2001)]; the authors conclude that some of the moves affected temperature measurements by 0.4 °C. The authors also discuss another station, #58367, which had a single move of 4 km; the authors conclude that the move affected temperature measurements by 0.3 °C. The authors' statistical analysis, though, is invalid-e.g. it does not consider significance-so the conclusions are unproven.)

Additionally, the following statement from the DOE/CAS report seems apposite: "Few station records included in the PRC data sets can be considered truly homogeneous [i.e. have no significant changes in location, instrumentation, etc.]. Even the best stations were subject to minor relocations or changes in observing times, and many have undoubtedly experienced large increases in urbanization."

The essential point here is that the quoted statements from Jones et al. and Wang et al. cannot be true and could not be in error by accident. The statements are fabricated.

Readers are encouraged to review Keenan's entire report, as well as the summary available at his website Informath.org, to make their own conclusions.

However, as errors in data collection and dissemination - be they innocent or intentional - continue to surface in reports crucial to the opinion of the IPCC and global warming alarmists around the world, it seems reasonable to conclude that not only isn't the debate over as folks like soon-to-be-Dr. Al Gore continually avow, it has only just begun.

I also learned that 85% of our global warming comes from cloud cover and water vapor, the other comes from local weather systems, the Earth's surface and other meteorological events.

Cat room confinement: Methods and techniques?

I have a cat that has a history of urinating on carpets, so when we looked for a new apartment, we found one that has 1/2 hard floors, 1/2 carpet. The carpeted area is everywhere, save the kitchen, bath, and back bedroom. The bedroom is the only place with a door, so this is where she is confined to for the time being.

We would like to get a gate or door for the next doorway, giving her access to the kitchen and bath, but have not found any solutions, past stacking two baby gates on top of one another. We were considering a screen door, or something with chicken wire, or perhaps a mission-style gate, but I want to do some research before we spend money (as we are both going to college, money is a concern). The door is an odd size, being 31.5" wide by 77" high.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Cat room confinement: Methods and techniques?
Kudos on keeping the cat's needs in mind while planning your move.

Can you use one of those oriental screen room dividers, maybe? I mean the folding room dividers. That should give you easy access while thoroughly blockin access to the cat.

Honestly though -- if it were me, I'd train the cat. Despite popular belief, cats ARE trainable. It just takes time, patience, and trust. The screen or divider or whatever you use would be a good "backup" during re-training time; and a new environment (with new rugs that have never been peed on) can kickstart the process.
Reply:Try a screen door. It may last a while. That way the cat can breath and you can get through that area also.
Reply:the screen door solution is very good - try checking with a used building supplies store (habitat for humanity ReStore comes to mind). Many times, they have used doors for cheap.

Also, if you are handy, or know someone who is - it wouldn't be too expensive to build your own.
Reply:I'd go ahead and put pergo through the rest of the house :) Or hardwood, if you can afford it. I have the same problem with my cat.. mostly she just does it to mark along my balcony doors, but it's along the carpet there. I suspect she'll do it even if I get laminate, but it'll be easier to clean up.

I hope that you've talked to the vet about your cat's urination issues... but if s/he doesn't pee on hard floors, I suspect it's behavioral rather than physical.

A lot of people here swear by Feliway... I guess they make it in dispensers that you can plugin, that can add the scent (that only a cat can smell) to a room, and that calms them and helps with issues like this.

If your cat has not been spayed or neutered... get that done right away. It might solve all of the urinating outside the litter box issues.

Pfizer can probably tell if you took an aspirin last week. The only way to know for sure is to contact Pfizer, and convince them the information is for a paper, not a way to use drugs in their employ.

you sound like you know a lot about this, so I am going to offer the information that I know.

Basicly finite element methods are perfect. They are able to give us models that are arbitraraly perfect. I have diped a little in to advanced programs that do the meshing and that stuff, and there is a lot of information about them. Try checking out PATRAN if you want a good start. (just google the name)

The limitations that arrise come from the computer that you are using. Finite element solvers have to be slow because they just have to proform trillions of calulations, thus to get large models you have to have a super computer. It is not that the computaions are difficult it is just that there are so many computations that must be made.

Finite element caculations have the ability to reach the atom (basicly) if you made your mesh small enouph you would be putting in every atom in to your system. This means that the solution would be perfect (with in an order of hbar over two)

Sorry it is not much of an answer to all of your queries, but that Is about all I know about that.

How do I grow a mango tree from seed?

I'm trying to grow an indoor mango tree from seed. I've done some research and have found various methods, but to date I have not had any luck.

First attempt: I took the seeds out of the husk and planted them directly in soil. The seeds ended up getting moldy and I had to throw them out.

Next, I cut one end of the husk and suspended the seed (while still in the husk) over a glass of water. I covered the whole thing with a plastic bag to make a mini greenhouse. Two of the seeds started to sprout until I realized that the seed was upside down. I turned the seeds around but then they died a few days later.

I tried this method again with more seeds, but this time right side up. Two of the seeds sprouted and one of them produced a ~5" shoot with tiny little hairlike filaments near the top. At this point I moved it from the pantry to a window sill where it could get light. After a few days, the hairlike filaments turned black and it died.

What do I need to do differently?

How do I grow a mango tree from seed?
The first method was correct the only thing you're doing wrong is not giving it enough heat. It's going moldy because there is some warmth present but not enough.

Try it again but this time keep it on the window sill and use a soda bottle as a garden cloche to keep it warm. This needs to stay on until the foliage becomes to large for it.

When planting the seed, make sure the kidney-dipped edge is facing the surface as this is where the seed will germinate from.
Reply:I've found that tropical plants (avocados, mangos, orchids, etc...) need greenhouse conditions - humidity and warmth (always above 72 degrees farenheit) to begin to grow and thrive. Otherwise, it's a losing battle.

If you can create and maintain greenhouse conditions, you might also want to try introducing the seed to soil after it has broken open. Sprouting the mango in water is a good idea, but it needs nutrients from soil relatively quickly after opening. A good way to start seeds in general is to "sprout" them just as you would sprouts in a sprouter. But that's only to get the seeds soaked in water. You can transfer them to soil before they actually sprout.
Reply:After eating or cutting away the fruit of the Mango, the seed must be scraped clean of most of the fibrous material clinging to it. Dry the seed thoroughly. The Mango seed is large and flat and looks a bit like a taco. One edge of the seed will be slightly rounded, the other edge will be a bit sharper. Being very careful, use a sharp knife to cut away enough of this sharp edge to expose a bit of the interior of the seed. Partially pry open the seed shell to expose the plant embryo but leave it intact. Place the seed, cut side up, in a small container of water and place it in a warm sunny location such as a kitchen window. Change the water every 2 or 3 days and in a few weeks the plant will start to grow. When the plant is well established and has about 6 leaves it is time to plant it in potting soil. Regardless of the time of year that I have tried to propagate from mango seed, only about half of the sprouts have survived. One of the problems has been moving the seed from water to soil too soon. The sprout really has to be well established before planting it into moist potting soil. The temperature should remain above 72°F. Propagating this plant may be easier during summer months when heat is free. Another problem may be that many mangoes are picked before they are ripe and the seeds have not fully developed.

The Mango plant can reach the size of a large tree outdoors in tropical climates. Its growth can be restricted somewhat by growing it in a pot indoors during the winter months. It is a very handsome plant with long blade-shaped shiny green leaves. During winter months void placing it near areas such as next to an outside door where cold drafts are likely. The fruit of one variety of Mango is more oblong and golden yellow in color. The other variety is less oblong and has a skin that is green to yellow with about half of the fruit being red on one side. These are the common varieties found most frequently in the U.S.A. All varieties can be propagated in the same way.
Reply:don;t bother trying to grow it yourself, you will save yourself a lot of grief by going to a nursery and getting a grafted one, even then you will not get any fruit for many years. Make sure you plant this in a sheltered sunny spot, the wind will blow off most of the flowers if you do not do this.

good luck

Help me write a research report on cognitive psychology.?
it sounds to me like you are in your 1st year of a 4 year psychology major as I was, and i would feel SO bad if i robbed you of this experience!!!!!

EVERYBODY does this paper. So you could probably purchase it if you make your mind up to do so. but i found it really rewarding. Mainly, because i was appalled at how bad our memory really is, how we can't recall details under stress full situations, and how we really aren't paying attention at all, ever. If you didn't do the work required for this paper, you may not have the thoughts you should have next time you see a driver talking on their cell phone while they should be checking the traffic in the lane next to them. Or, if you go on to major in adolescent psych like i did, you might not pick up on suicidal signs in a kid ready to explode, because they can be extremely subtle. And you're supposed to have learned the lesson of how dumb and unaware humans as a whole really are. Especially those of us who are going to go on to save the rest of us. HA. right?

" We learn at a much slower rate than we think we do, and we don't retain what we thought we learned to begin with because what we retain is not what we learned." and you can quote me. Micah McDaniel.

How do I get a 7 month old baby to sleep through the night?

I have a 7 month old baby who is pretty happy. She takes two 1 1/2- 2 hour naps during the day no problem. However, she is still getting up 1-2 times a night to feed. I am not breastfeeding and she is getting cereal right before bed. The doctor says there is no reason that she should be getting up to feed and that she should be sleeping through the night. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get her to sleep through the night? I have researched the Ferber method and other sleep situations and I am willing try anything. I am looking for the best suggestions that you have tried, before I go out on my own. This is the hardest thing ever and I do not know of anyone else in my situation. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

How do I get a 7 month old baby to sleep through the night?
I know it sounds cruel, but this works. Just don't give her the bottle. She will cry for about an hour the first night. Maybe half an hour the second, and possibly a little the third. When my daughter did this, I let her sleep in bed with me (only when she woke up though) and after three nights, she was sleeping through the night, no problem. Your daughter is only waking up out of habit, she can't change the habit without your help. Your doc is right, she doesn't need the extra meals, but she will continue to wake if you don't do something. This also teaches her how to self sooth. I learned the hard way, my daughter didn't sleep through the night till she was 18MO because I couldn't stand to hear her cry for a bottle and would ALWAYS cave. Then I cut her off the late night cold turkey and she started going through the night. Best thing I did for me and for her!
Reply:If she is wakign up hungry then there is EVERY reason she shoudl be waking up to feed. Find another pediatrician or ask any online email in a question type place. I'm sorry, but that was a crazy thing to say to you. Even for formula fed babies it is common for them to wake until 3 or 4 years-not to eat at that age but still to wake. Maybe she isn;t really hungry, that part is just habit? But as for wakign up it is EXTREMELY common for some children even until they start school. There is nothign the matter with it. Please be careful what method you shoose to try and teach her to sleep through. Many of them will also leave her insecure when what she needs is YOU. Too much we expect BABIES to be born grown. Just love her and hold her if she wakes. See if you can just rock her, maybe she is only wakign because she needs you.
Reply:Your baby will sleep all night when he/she is ready. Sorry to say, but your Dr. cant say that this is the age your child should sleep all night. Its up to the individual baby.
Reply:How much does your baby weigh? It's not till after they weigh 11lbs. till they can sleep through the night. Also, do you swaddle her when you lay her down? Swaddling made a big difference in my child's sleeping. http://thomasmedical.com
Reply:I also have a 7 month old baby, and he also gets up 1 or 2 times at night to eat, other than that he sleeps good, but the doctor told me to try patting his belly when he wakes up to let him know your still there, or to give him a few minutes and see if he will go back to sleep on his own, and he will eventually learn to sleep all through the night.
Reply:All i did was made sure he had a full tummy, a bowl of warm cereal did it for my son and i gave him a warm bath before bed and made sure his bed was warm and snuggly but not too warm. my son slept all night every night after 4 months old.
Reply:You are so lucky!!!! My son is 7 months old and he wakes up about 5 times a night to eat. And that is great to me because he cried for the first 6 months of his life from reflux. Sometimes during the night there would be a 3 hour period where he woke up every 10-15 minutes. So now i consider myself lucky and you should too. A lot of parents would kill to have their baby wake up only twice a night. Oh and don't try the crying-it-out method. I've read that it causes trust issues with baby and mommy. Your baby needs to know that you're there for her when she cries. Here's one thing I've hear that works. Pay attention to the times she wakes up at night. Right before you know that she is going to wake up, go in her room and feed her while she is sleeping. Put her back in her crib. Do this for a week or so and then slowly illiminate feedings. I haven't tried this because there is no consistency with my son, he is completely unpredictible, I never know when he is going to wake up.
Reply:Every child is different. I have 3, my oldest slept through the night by 4 months, my middle child didn't sleep through the night until she was almost 2 and I'm still waiting on my youngest to let me sleep.
Reply:I too have a 7month old that wakes up through the night. My doctor said the same thing about they should be sleeping through the night and not eating at all. Well I have mixed feelings about that becasue i don't always sleep through the night and if I am thirsty I get up and get something to drink myself so why shouldn't our babies if they are. On the other hand it would be nice to see him sleep through the night. I have tried a couple of things. I have tried the doctors thing of just letting him cry and it really didn't work. I have also tried this and it seems to work alot better. I am feeding him cereal before bed, giving him a warm bath right before bed, and then when he wakes up giving him a little bit of food like 2ounces. That may be more then what you are giving but every child is different. I have tried to ween him off as much he used to eat 6ounces at a time at night and then i went down to 4ounces and then now I am at 2. i am going to try after one week of two ounces goin to no bottle. I am like you I wanted to know and I got all kind of different answers. My suggestion is do what you think is best in your heart. You know your baby and his/her habbits. None of us know your child or the eating situation. Try different things and see which one works. I am doing what I just said and it seems to be working. I also have a child that likes to eat. He is 7months and weighs 22pounds. He is a big boy not fat because he is also tall.

Reply:This is such a touchy subject. My baby did this and we were giving her a pacifier when we put her to bed. When she'd wake up at 3 and cry, a friend suggested trying to appease her with her 'binky.' I thought it wouldn't work, but I was willing to spend 30 min in the middle of the night trying it because that's how much time I would've spent feeding her anyway. She took the binky and slept. I am not sure how much more difficult it will be for you since your baby is older than mine was when we tried this. The main thing is consistency. You will have to choose a strategy and remain consistent for a week or so to give it a fair chance.
Reply:I have found that the fastest, easiest way is simply to get up, feed and snuggle the baby and put him/her back to bed.

This time goes by so quickly. Enjoy those times of having your baby all to yourself!

The basic goal of sociological research is to understand the social world in its many forms. Quantitative methods and qualitative methods are two main types of sociological research methods. Sociologists often use quantitative methods -- such as social statistics or network analysis - to investigate the structure of a social process or describe patterns in social relationships. Sociologists also often use qualitative methods - such as focused interviews, group discussions and ethnographic methods - to investigate social processes. Sociologists also use applied research methods such as evaluation research and assessment.

In simplier words, what does this mean?
Sociologists want to understand society. They do this by doing research. Sometimes the research involves counting and measuring things, and sometimes it involves talking to people. They also take a close look at how other sociologists did their research.

What do you think about focus group? Would you join?

Focus Group is a marketing research method. Usually before a new product or a new ad is launched, the company arrange a small group a people, usually 3-8 people to sit in a comfortable room. Food and drink will be served. Then they will have 1-2 hours to talk about their opinion about the product or ad. The researcher seldom express his opinion. What they talk will be taped and analysed by the marketing experts to help them get some clue out from it.

What do you think about focus group? Would you join?
"Focus groups may be the worst form of market research...except for all the others..." (Templeton, Jane - "The Focus Group", Probus Publishing, Chicago, 1994)

It is an abused research method because, as it is fast, simple, easy to understand for the marketeer, is used for everything, as the only technique.

It gives the wrong impression of knowing something about the consumer. Wrong because the sample is too small.

It is indispensable to explore, to get sensations, to develop hypothesis.

It is no so good to confirm that hypothesis, because the sample is too small.

About if I would join (participate) in one, of course I would do. What is the problem?
Reply:I thought that when you said "join one" you ment to be part of the sample.

There are very useful, indispensable I said, to explore and develop hypothesis. I have used almost hundreds of them (during 30 years...) and I would it again.

The only problem is that they are used for everything. Report Abuse

What is the best way to teach my 5 year old son piano?

I have a 5 year old son that I would like to learn the piano. I'm 25 and have played since I was 5 or 6 ... I know how to sight read and understand musical theory. I researched the Suzuki method, and I agree in it with some principles, but I think it fails in some as well (particularly sight reading). I have a grand and a digital piano, I was thinking of color coding the notes of C major, and writing out the colored notes on staff to songs of his liking. I don't want him to feel forced, or like practicing should be a chore, so I really only want to focus on him learning songs he likes right now. Should I insist on good hand positioning, or just let him peck the notes for now so as not to frustrate him with mechanics?

What is the best way to teach my 5 year old son piano?
I would suggest sending your child to a teacher (someone other than you as a parent...) I have degrees in piano and music education, I teach music for a profession, I have four children of my own, but I do not give them lessons myself. I have encouraged all of our children to play musical instruments, but when the time came, I took them to another teacher (even though I have the technical skill to teach them myself). If you want to avoid frustration and resentment, and if you want your son to find the same joy in music that you have obviously found, take him to a teacher and then play along with him at home. This way, you get to show him the fun part of it all, and you don't become the meanie who is "making him do this". This has definitely worked for us - and we both are music teachers by trade...but we also recognize that our children respond better to another person teaching them.
Reply:I recommend not teaching him yourself. I justthink it's better if it comes from a "teacher". If you can't afford it, then I do encourage you to teach him in anyway possible because it's a great skill, one that I'm very glad my parents forced on me. Outside of that, expose him. Play at home, and maybe teacher him a simple song like "Heart and Soul" so you guys can play together and have fun. Enthusiasm will help him get into it.
Reply:Play the Piano yourself in the Home -

expose him to it daily

integrate songs he can sing to and then invite him to "help" you by playing some of the song.

Ignite the passion for music with by involving him in the discovery process
Reply:i teach my little sister piano and i use bribes sometimes to push her to do better. everytime she plays well i award her stickers and they can add up to buy something. try having him play simple disney tunes that he knows. that helps a lot with motivation. if he doesn't know how to read music well yet, sneak some flash card work with normal activities.

Do natural breast enhancers actually work?

I'm researching this method of enhancing your breasts naturally by taking a pill and I've found some pretty good reviews. But I want to know the answer from someone who's used them. Do they work? If they do, which are the best?

Do natural breast enhancers actually work?
I tried them and they worked but only a very little.

I've had better results with self-hypnosis (I'm in the process of it now and have had amazing results). The hypnosis triggers the release of chemicals in your body and the tissue really does begin to grow. I've had tender breasts for a few weeks now and I think it is due to their growth, they are noticeably bigger (and this was confirmed by a second opinion). Email me if you want more info on it.
Reply:Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but they do NOT work and you run the risk of really messing with your hormones. There is a very common misconception that if it is "natural" or "herbal" that you are not taking any risks which is completely NOT true. You can still mess up your system and do damage to your body. I did the usual method. IMPLANTS and I love them. I had no pain after the surgery and am completely satisfied with the results. I only wish I had done it sooner. Good luck.
Reply:nope
Reply:I've used breast enhancement pills, I can't remember the exact name but I think they contained some type of bovine hormone or something like that. They did not work at all, it was a complete waste of money. I've also tried special protein shakes, that did not work either. I think all natural breast enhancers are a fake, if not, more people would be using them instead of getting surgery, which is a lot more costly.
Reply:horray for boobies!
Reply:I'm an herbalist and people have told me they had good results with a product called Grobust. There are not enough tests to know if there will be long term effects, but I am sure it affects hormones because most of the women report improvement in PMS.
Reply:If they do give me a call!!
Reply:Save Your Money
Reply:It has been proven that "natural" breast inhancers do not work. Also the Bovine Hormone that Curious was referring to is acctually called RBgH -Recombinate Bovine growth Hormone. It's commonly used in cows to help them produce more milk, In Canada and the UK there is evidence to suggest that RBgH can cause children to mature faster and links to cancer. If you would like to know more about RBgH go to this website www.oberweisdairy.com I hope this info helps.
Reply:i heard (not a COMPLETELY reliable source) about a girl who took those, and only ONE of her breasts grew.... the other one stayed small. that's a problem. my suggestion would be to do LOTS of research before you start popping pills to "enhance" your breasts.

taking birth control pills makes some women's breasts seem larger.... those are safe.

Help on ELECTROCULTURE research?

I've chosen electroculture as my research topic. Its the effect of electricity on the germination or growth of plants. Do you know any sources on how to conduct the method? Or any study of the same topic. Suggestions? Anything that can help?

Help on ELECTROCULTURE research?
Electro culture is the use of electricity of small power to improve plant germination, growth, and yield. It is a field not yet fully explored by scientists, although it is as old as the study of electricity itself. As long ago as 1775, a professor at the University of Turin (Italy) stated that nature makes extensive use of atmospheric electric power for promoting vegetation. What this professor got from his observations was that after every atmospheric electric charge, he had an increase in the plant productivity. This result can be consistent with what happens with nitrogen capturing by symbiotic leguminous plants during the electric atmospheric charges. The symbiotic activity reaches a maximum during this event. How could that occur? There may probably be sufficient nitrogen supplied by symbiotic bacteria living in the root zone, to the plant, which in turn allows the bacteria to feed on the carbon it supplies.

Has anyone tried Pharmacological Extinction for alcoholism?

I've been researching a method called Pharmacological Extinction which, for alcoholics that actually want to quit (as opposed to being pressured into quitting by others), it's supposed to have something like a 25% complete abstinance rate and 87% rate of reduction below where alcohol consumption causes cellular damage.

The problem is that this cure seems to exist mostly in Finland. Has anyone here tried it? How effective was it for you?

Methods of studying human behavior?

These are methods of studying human behavior: case study, naturalistic observation, correlational research, survey research, and the experimental method.

If you were going to design a study investigating the relationship between alcohol and violence, which of these methods would you choose and why? What would be the relative strengths and weaknesses of this study? What ethical considerations must be taken into account while undertaking this study?

Methods of studying human behavior?
I would use a survey method, for the following reasons:

1. Surveying is one of the easiest ways to obtain data on human behavior. It's much easier (and quicker) to create and distribute a survey than it is to conduct a case study, naturalistic observation, or an ethnography.

2. Surveys are anonymous, allowing respondents (on average) to be more honest with their answers. This is important, especially when dealing with issues like alcohol use and violence, which are personal and often touchy. When humans know their behavior is being observed by a researcher (like in a case study), they often alter their behavior to make it appear more socially acceptable, which creates poor data.

3. Surveying allows you to analyze your data statistically, making generalization of your results much easier (which is important in social science research). This could also make your research more attractive to social science journals that publish these types of studies.

Good luck with your research.

To those who oppose embryonic stem cell research - would this make you change your mind?

http://www.nature.com/news/2007/070604/f...

Unfortunately it has only happened in mice, but the technique could theoretically be used on human cells as well. No embryos are destroyed using this method. Would this make you change your mind about funding research in this area if this method was used to create the source of the cells?

To those who oppose embryonic stem cell research - would this make you change your mind?
i don't oppose it, and i think what they are doing is great. my three year old was just diagonosed with type I diabetes, and the researchers have regrown new pancreas in mice with stem cells! they could be doing this in people in 10 to15 years, there may be a cure for type I diabetes by the time my daughter graduates from high school!

that would be great
Reply:Well from the looks of it, this isn't really embryonic stem cells at all. A modified skin cell is all it is. I doubt it would fall under the funding ban, so your question really doesn't make sense.

Note the risk of cancer, which has been found with embryonic stem cells, also.
Reply:no, the bad by far outweigh the good things that could happen. We have pushed the line too far before and stem cell researchers are trying to bend the line to far. To many unimaginable terrible things could happen from stem cell research. Like a remake of Hitler times, movies like Gattaca could come true, the idea just scares me to death!

What is the scientific method of research?????

I. The scientific method has four steps

1. Observation and description of a phenomenon or group of phenomena.

2. Formulation of an hypothesis to explain the phenomena. In physics, the hypothesis often takes the form of a causal mechanism or a mathematical relation.

3. Use of the hypothesis to predict the existence of other phenomena, or to predict quantitatively the results of new observations.

4. Performance of experimental tests of the predictions by several independent experimenters and properly performed experiments.

If the experiments bear out the hypothesis it may come to be regarded as a theory or law of nature (more on the concepts of hypothesis, model, theory and law below). If the experiments do not bear out the hypothesis, it must be rejected or modified. What is key in the description of the scientific method just given is the predictive power (the ability to get more out of the theory than you put in; see Barrow, 1991) of the hypothesis or theory, as tested by experiment. It is often said in science that theories can never be proved, only disproved. There is always the possibility that a new observation or a new experiment will conflict with a long-standing theory.

II. Testing hypotheses

As just stated, experimental tests may lead either to the confirmation of the hypothesis, or to the ruling out of the hypothesis. The scientific method requires that an hypothesis be ruled out or modified if its predictions are clearly and repeatedly incompatible with experimental tests. Further, no matter how elegant a theory is, its predictions must agree with experimental results if we are to believe that it is a valid description of nature. In physics, as in every experimental science, "experiment is supreme" and experimental verification of hypothetical predictions is absolutely necessary. Experiments may test the theory directly (for example, the observation of a new particle) or may test for consequences derived from the theory using mathematics and logic (the rate of a radioactive decay process requiring the existence of the new particle). Note that the necessity of experiment also implies that a theory must be testable. Theories which cannot be tested, because, for instance, they have no observable ramifications (such as, a particle whose characteristics make it unobservable), do not qualify as scientific theories.

If the predictions of a long-standing theory are found to be in disagreement with new experimental results, the theory may be discarded as a description of reality, but it may continue to be applicable within a limited range of measurable parameters. For example, the laws of classical mechanics (Newton's Laws) are valid only when the velocities of interest are much smaller than the speed of light (that is, in algebraic form, when v/c %26lt;%26lt; 1). Since this is the domain of a large portion of human experience, the laws of classical mechanics are widely, usefully and correctly applied in a large range of technological and scientific problems. Yet in nature we observe a domain in which v/c is not small. The motions of objects in this domain, as well as motion in the "classical" domain, are accurately described through the equations of Einstein's theory of relativity. We believe, due to experimental tests, that relativistic theory provides a more general, and therefore more accurate, description of the principles governing our universe, than the earlier "classical" theory. Further, we find that the relativistic equations reduce to the classical equations in the limit v/c %26lt;%26lt; 1. Similarly, classical physics is valid only at distances much larger than atomic scales (x %26gt;%26gt; 10-8 m). A description which is valid at all length scales is given by the equations of quantum mechanics.

We are all familiar with theories which had to be discarded in the face of experimental evidence. In the field of astronomy, the earth-centered description of the planetary orbits was overthrown by the Copernican system, in which the sun was placed at the center of a series of concentric, circular planetary orbits. Later, this theory was modified, as measurements of the planets motions were found to be compatible with elliptical, not circular, orbits, and still later planetary motion was found to be derivable from Newton's laws.

Error in experiments have several sources. First, there is error intrinsic to instruments of measurement. Because this type of error has equal probability of producing a measurement higher or lower numerically than the "true" value, it is called random error. Second, there is non-random or systematic error, due to factors which bias the result in one direction. No measurement, and therefore no experiment, can be perfectly precise. At the same time, in science we have standard ways of estimating and in some cases reducing errors. Thus it is important to determine the accuracy of a particular measurement and, when stating quantitative results, to quote the measurement error. A measurement without a quoted error is meaningless. The comparison between experiment and theory is made within the context of experimental errors. Scientists ask, how many standard deviations are the results from the theoretical prediction? Have all sources of systematic and random errors been properly estimated? This is discussed in more detail in the appendix on Error Analysis and in Statistics Lab 1.

There are also many features on this web site, such as contests and special surveys, from which you can redeem extra prizes that would be sent to you with your monthly cheque, such as iPods, Xbox 360s, gift certificates, and much more.

Cheques are sent monthly, and usually arrive about a week or a week and a half into the next month. No payment from you is ever required, not to sign up, not EVER. Unlike other sites that try to scam people out of their money, this site never requires you to pay them.

"If the site doesn't get paid from me, then why would they have this service going?" - The site doesn't get paid directly from you, but when you complete an offer or survey, they also get paid a small portion of what you earned yourself. For example, if you complete a survey about computers let's say, you would earn maybe $2 and the web site itself would recieve $0.50 from the company also for getting you to complete the survey. These surveys take little time at all, most taking up less than even 2 or 3 minutes of your time.

Fraud is also a big deal on the Internet these days, and this site recognizes that. That is why they ask for ONLY three bits of information: Your name, email address and your home address. Yup, that is all. No credit card information, no banking information, nothing like that. All they require is your name and address so that your cheque can be sent to your home every month. Your email address is only required to confirm that you have done the offers and surveys. Fortunately, no spam mail or junk mail is ever sent out by this site and your information is never shared with any other company.

Personally I have been a member of this website, along with thousands of others, for approximately 1 year now and have earned well over $2500 by working in my spare time. This web site has been great to me, also the members and administrator are very friendly, and are always there to help you with a question or problem you may be having. So far, I've listed only positives about this site, because I can't think of a single negative thing about it. Earn money in your spare time, at no cost to you...Simple!
Reply:Go to Alexa.com and look for the number one websites in given categories. Porn is the biggest seller but it is also a very hard market to break into in a big way since there is already so much behind it. Information is a big seller but the category is so wide. Niche marketing is the best way in. Find a niche you know a lot about and write articles about it. Find products associated with that niche and sell them from the articles. The tighter the niche the better the search results will be. Look at http://www.absolutetrash.co.uk for links to niche articles to give you some ideas.

You are effectively wanting to start and run a business with little to no experience or knowledge? Not gonna happen. Not if you want to be successful and make money. You need to learn the ins and outs of running businesses to learn how to deal with the people and paperwork required. If there were ways to make money with out knowing what you are doing then the world would be doing it.

Start learning and eventually you will get there...
Reply:I am a skeptic when it comes to paid surveys and 'get paid to complete offer' sites, but honestly many of them are legit and have enabled me to generate a great amount of extra money. On one site, you can find actual photos of checks people have gotten from the site. On my favorite site that I use, the total payment cashout reached six figures ($100,000) for the month of May!! The most important thing is to never get discouraged if you start out slow. Those $1-$5 surveys will add up over time, and doing them from more than one site at a time really increases your income. My first week using three of these survey sites, combined, I made over $60 dollars without even touching a credit card, so they really do pay. Depending on the amount of time you can dedicate to the websites, you can make so much more. Yahoo doesn't allow me to post the actual links like I used to, but if you want them, just email me and I'll get them to you ASAP! Have fun!

PS: The survey panel thats hard to get onto is Pinecone Research because you have to find a flashing banner and click it to get to the sign up form, but if you can manage that, you get $5 per survey. Anyway try some of the ones above. They are free and easy to get started.

That comes from having original and unique ideas, look at the likes of the Million Dollar webpage - guy with no business experience starts selling space on a website at $1 a pixel, sells a million pixels of advertising - makes a million dollars.

He didn't plan to do that, didn't form a business strategy, he just did it, had the flash of an idea and went for it.

THAT's how you make money on the internet, not through reading peoples advice on it.
Reply:Starting a business and making money is very hard. Firstly, you need to know what you are doing, the right attitude and then you need luck. Your thinking is all wrong Of course its nice to make money, but unless you know your subject inside out and enjoy it, you've no hope. Think of what you're good at, and then explore that field to see the possibilities. You can't just go into a certain field because you think its easy to make money out of it. Get the knowledge first!
Reply:I built up my business free using the following site. It never asks you for money to use all the tools to build a list. Niche Marketing is definately the way to go. Get all the tools and tutoring you need here. No money needed to learn the business. Don't go for scamming sites that ask you for money.

What do case studies and naturalistic observation have in common...?

...as psychological research methods.

What do case studies and naturalistic observation have in common...?
The following are excerpts from my notes of 2 of my 2nd year psychology classes.

Naturalistic observation - observe and record behaviours of children in natural settings

Pro- real life behaviours – antecedents and consequences

Con – possible confounding variables – rare behaviours may not occur.

Case Studies

In-depth examination of psychological characteristics/behaviours of single individual. Cannot generalize.

Naturalistic observations – field methods. – descriptive research. Does not interfere with observation. Just observe and report what is spontaneously occurring. Description of real life behaviour, as opposite to constructed lab settings. Good external validity. No control over behaviour of which you are interested in. may have to wait a long time for behaviour to materialize. Natural settings very complex. Many things happening at once, can’t observe all. Potential bias on part of observer my distort data observers presence may change behaviour. Settings always changing, difficult to replicate.

Case Studies

interviews, review of records, testing. Often by clinicians to diagnose problem. Also in research – Freud. Find one specific factor, can expand. GENERATE HYPOTHESIS – needs to be tested on other people. Often much info from past comes from interviews with subjects, family, friends all problems of self report. Limited external validity – might not be true for other individuals.

Hope this helps.

Qualitative and Quantitative Research?

I am analyzing a donor/sponsor database to identify trends on giving based on how many times they donated, how much, and the specific purpose of the donation. Which method of research am I conducting? Is it qualitative or quantitative or something else. Serious answers please. Thank you.

Qualitative and Quantitative Research?
both, the last question is qualitative.
Reply:Quantitative

Qualitative would be their opinions of their experience.

"How did you feel while donating"
Reply:that's quantitive.. your results will be numeric (ratios.. statistical percentages.. etc.)
Reply:If you're dealing with numbers, it's quanititative.

I am considering going back to do some more research on divination tehcniques. Can you suggest some???

I have over many years used divination tools. A friend suggested to me that Tarot is not only the best method of divination but is actually the book of life in card form. I have tried my hand at tarot many years ago but am looking into revisiting my research in this field and would like to have some suggestions as to what other means of divination I should investigate. THANKS for your input.

While I love the tarot, I wouldn't say it's the best divination tool for everyone. Some people are good at tarot reading, others are not.

Perhaps you would be interested in this book:

There's a whole slew of divination techniques you could try your hand at and find the ones that work best for you.

Reply:Your friend was right in that the tarot reflects two layers of life and can give very detailed information if you understand the cards. the major arcana reflects the higher aspect or inner desires and intentions, and the minor arcana represents what we actually do in life.

the method depends on your abilites and what you are trying to achieve. the method that will be best for you depends on intuitive ability. Scrying is effectively looking into something and using that focus and the object to create some kind of visual representation that you can interpret. so anything will do.

Psychometry (which by the way can include cards) is a feeling of energy related to the owner of choice made by the querant. using jewellery, photos or any object that carries an energy frequency reflecting the client.

You can be a good tarot reader with learning, (note if you prefer a visual aspect any cards will do as long as you like them), with a mimimum of intuition, this is why they are considered so highly, they really do cover life and their complexity allows you to read quite literally what is going on in someones life.

If you are highly intuitive cards tend to be superfluous as do other methods, but can still be fun or a preference from the client or friend and most certainly cards and scrying techniques can be helpful in aiding intuitive development.

Above is a very long list a various types. I have tried dowsing, cards and various "throwing" methods. Dowsing is difficult to master, but very enjoyable. I've had the best luck with the throwing method (coins) or with spontaneous methods. (picking a random book, asking an question and opening to a random page.)

Good luck.
Reply:well you have mirror gazing, water gazing, I-ching, burning bone method, runes, tarot, ogham, and the Notradomus method

What is a good ancient culture to research for school that archaeologist have studied and reconstructed?

please pick a culture that is easy to find information on how they lived their daily life as well as the methods used by the archaeologist to reconstruct the past.

I once taught a unit on neolithic man to my World History Class. I showed them slides of Skaara Brae, which is a neolithic village that is located in the Orkney Islands, or in extreme northern Scotland, etc. (you can see it by doing a google search). This was basically a small village that was an example of "communal" living, they all have individual apartments, and it was all underground, being extremely routh weather. Tunnels connected all the "apartments" in this community. If you decide to check this out, and need more info, feel free to email me.

What are the 5 types of data collection methods?

In our research...

What are the 5 types of data collection methods?
I only know two. Empirical I believe is one where you go out in the field and observe nature in action. The other is the scientific method where you use the lab and control variables.
Reply:Sight, Sound, Taste, Touch, Smell.

I'm doing my research on screening for oil palm that resistance to ganoderma?

what is the best method for my research

I'm doing my research on screening for oil palm that resistance to ganoderma?
That is an extremely broad question. I will try and give some ideas, but I have no idea what you have access to and how you prefer to do research.

My first recommendation would be to find out if you can culture ganoderma. If you can, then you have a tool to begin your work.

Next, I would gather as many extracts of oil palm trunks and freeze them as your library of oil palms. Then you can start screening your library. Grow up some ganoderma cultures, and apply your oil palm extracts in a controlled manner, and find a way to measure ganoderma cell death, or inhibition of growth.

If you find palm extracts that do kill or inhibit ganoderma growth, move onto the whole plants that you got the extract from and design experiments around the whole organism.

I am neither a mycologist, nor a plant biologist, so these are my best guesses about how you would approach this problem. I hope this helps because I love palm oil.

What is the difference between an Experimental Design, Experimental Method and a Research Design (psychology)?

i dont know the difference! one text says one thing and another says something else. I'm confused!!

for instance,

1. a researcher conducts a study to find if babies who cry alot and get picked up immediately turn out to be spoilt children. what is the experimenter's research design?

2. uni students are asked to use a GPS to find and point towards the accurate direction of 3 locations from the lab for a cognitive mapping study. what is the experimental design? what is the experimental method?

3. three groups of lil kids are assigned randomly and told to do a puzzle and if they finish, they can all get a dollar now or 3 dollars tomorrow for the first group, 3 dollars in 2 days for the second group and 3 dollars in 4 days for the 3rd group. the researchers are testing delayed gratification. what is the experimental design?

i thought that the experimental design is just the way in which the kids were assigned, which is by random assignment. is this right?

What is the difference between an Experimental Design, Experimental Method and a Research Design (psychology)?
Unfortunately, your question is not formed well enough to answer this properly.

The only thing I can point you to is the idea of design being designated by various categories such as: Within Subjects vs Between Subjects, Correlational vs Experimental design, Field research vs Lab Research, Applied vs Basic research, Factorial vs main effect designs, etc. You can drop me an email if you have specific questions.
